Unexpected Treats at Huron Peak

Denver – As hikers tackle Colorado’s mountains, one memorable sight was a man dressed in an ice cream cone costume, cheerfully offering frozen delights to unsuspecting climbers.

No one seems to know this ice cream bearer’s identity, but he made quite an impression while hauling 60 pounds of ice cream sandwiches and bars, along with dry ice, over the Labor Day weekend. News of his sweet surprise spread quickly among those trudging up the state’s tallest peaks, which reach over 14,000 feet.

Blaine and Katie Griffin were about three-quarters of the way up Huron Peak when fellow hikers shared the unexpected news. They couldn’t help but worry; would the ice cream still be there by the time they arrived?

“Finally, we made it to the summit, and honestly, we were so tired, hot, and thirsty. We had no idea, but the ice cream was just what we needed,” Blaine Griffin remarked.

He and his wife relished their cold treats, though they found it amusingly cold even after their strenuous hike.

Christopher Whitestone shared that his kids, Olivia (11) and Owen (8), dashed over to the ice cream man as soon as they spotted him. He described the mountain as being among the more manageable climbs, despite the many peaks towering over 14,000 feet.

“That experience really made a lasting impression on my kids,” Whitestone said. “But I had to remind them not to expect this every time we hike.”

A social media snapshot displayed a man lounging in a camp chair, a beer nestled among the armrests, glasses on, and sporting a fake mustache. In a dedicated Facebook group for climbers tackling the state’s 14ers, he was celebrated as a hero—”legendary dairy,” some called him.

People were impressed by his ability to scale mountains while bearing such a heavy load, especially given the thin air that can complicate even simple tasks.

Blaine Griffin noted that the man eventually passed them on his way down, moving quickly.

Unfortunately, by the time Rick and Sarah Rosenkrantz from Las Vegas reached the peak, the ice cream had all disappeared. However, Rick expressed his appreciation for witnessing such light-hearted antics during their adventure. He mentioned that while he typically focuses on outdoor accomplishments, this event reminded him to simply enjoy the moment.
