Critics Share Spotlight with Trump at US Open

On a recent Sunday afternoon, President Donald Trump found himself surrounded by some of his most vocal critics at the US Open in New York City. Celebrities and athletes, including Bruce Springsteen, Lindsey Vonn, Anna Wintour, and Stephen Curry, took in the action at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.

Springsteen, who recently wrapped up a European tour, did not hold back in his criticism of Trump and his administration, labeling them as “rebellious.” He encouraged fans in Germany to unite against what he called “authoritarianism.”

Vonn, the Olympic gold medalist, expressed her refusal to represent Trump during the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. She remarked, “I want to represent the people of America, not the president.” In earlier statements, she said she was tuning out politics while racing in Italy, sharing, “There’s a lot going on in the US and not all of that is positive. I’m excited to take a break.” She appreciates the focus that ski racing provides, stating, “When I’m at the starting gate, that’s all I think about.”

Wintour, the former Vogue editor, has had her share of conflicts with Trump, especially criticizing his pandemic response in 2020. Curry famously had a public dispute with Trump when he declined to visit the White House following his team’s championship win, prompting Trump to rescind the invitation. In a 2022 interview, Curry mentioned, “Most of his rhetoric has a tone of division that has no place in our country.”

As Trump entered the stadium around the game’s commencement, he received a mixed reaction from the crowd—initially greeted with applause before facing some boos during the national anthem broadcast.

The day culminated in an exciting match between Carlos Alcaraz and Janik Sinner, with Alcaraz ultimately claiming victory and earning his second US Open title.
