Father on the run, Tom Phillips, killed in gunfight with police in New Zealand

Tragic Shooting Incident in New Zealand

A man, who had been missing in New Zealand’s wilderness with his three young children for several years, was shot and killed during a confrontation with police on Monday. This incident occurred as he attempted to rob a supply store.

Tom Phillips vanished into the Waikato wilderness with his children—Ember, now 9; Maverick, 12; and another child—after a custody dispute with their mother just before Christmas 2021.

For a long time, there were serious concerns about the children’s safety. It wasn’t until October 2024 that a group of pig hunters stumbled upon them, observing them carrying large backpacks and wearing masks, with Phillips leading them through the trees.

On Monday, police were alerted to a possible robbery at a local property in Piopio, a part of the expansive Waikato region where Phillips and his children had previously been spotted. This report came in around 2:30 a.m. local time.

According to Deputy Chief Jill Rogers, officers saw two individuals on a quad bike dressed in farm clothing with headlamps. Phillips had previously come under law enforcement’s attention for taking a quad bike and stealing camping gear, including headlamps.

The driver, in an attempt to flee, reportedly shot at officers at close range when they managed to stop the bike. One officer was injured, requiring surgery for wounds to his head and shoulder. Unfortunately, Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts at first aid.

During the incident, one of the children was found with a firearm cache, while officials are still in the process of locating the other two children. It’s still unclear which child was present with Phillips during the altercation.

Rogers stated that support has been arranged for the child on-site, but they couldn’t disclose details about the children’s current locations at this time. She described the incident as deeply traumatic, especially given the rural setting where it took place.

The children’s mother expressed mixed feelings—relief at potentially reuniting with her kids, yet sorrow over how the situation unfolded. “Our hope has always been that our children will return safely and peacefully,” she said in a statement.

She has requested privacy as they begin to help the children adjust to a more stable environment following their difficult journey. Meanwhile, authorities have struggled to navigate the challenges of the Waikato landscape in their ongoing effort to locate Phillips. While they offered rewards for tips leading to his capture, leads often faded quickly, making the search difficult.
