Ryan Routh will defend himself in the trial for the attempted assassination of Trump.

The selection process for jurors begins on Monday in Fort Pierce, Florida, for the high-profile federal case against Ryan Rouse. He’s been charged with attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at the West Palm Beach Golf Club, an incident said to have occurred in September 2024.

This juror selection is expected to wrap up by Wednesday.

Potential jurors will be chosen from voter registration lists and driver’s license records relevant to Florida’s Southern District. They will be sworn in and questioned to ensure fairness. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida is handling the prosecution.

Both the prosecutor and Rouse will have the chance to question jury candidates directly.

Rouse faces multiple charges, including attempted assassination and several firearm-related offenses against a federal officer. Prosecutors claim he could face life in prison if convicted. Interestingly, he has pleaded not guilty to all federal charges and is also contesting separate state charges of terrorism and attempted murder.

In this case, Trump is not the defendant.

The presiding judge, appointed by Trump, has approved Rouse’s request to represent himself, though court-appointed lawyers will be available if necessary.

The prosecution alleges that Rouse spent considerable time plotting the attack, even camping out for hours near Trump’s golf course with a rifle. A Secret Service agent reportedly spotted him and opened fire when Rouse allegedly targeted the agent. Investigators later found a letter expressing Rouse’s regret about not having succeeded in killing Trump. Furthermore, just weeks prior to his arrest in August 2024, he was said to have procured anti-aircraft weaponry and attempted to hire someone to track Trump’s flights.

The opening statements for the trial are expected to start on September 11th, and the proceedings are estimated to last about two weeks.
