LeBron James Addresses China in Essay Following NBA Controversy

LeBron James recently shared an essay with a state-owned Chinese publication, reacting to the controversy ignited by former Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey. This situation had strained the NBA’s relationship with China.

This reflection by the Los Angeles Lakers star came after he wrapped up his “eternal king” tour, which included stops in Shanghai and Chengdu. Interestingly, this tour also aligned with the 20th anniversary of Nike in Asia.

In his essay, James expressed his deep appreciation for his Chinese supporters. “The warmth and kindness of my friends here really touch me. I strive to give my all in every game and show my gratitude,” he wrote. He also mentioned hopes of contributing to the growth of basketball in China.

Previously, both the Lakers and Brooklyn Nets had toured Asia prior to the start of the 2019-20 season. However, that visit coincided with significant protests in Hong Kong against a controversial security law. Morey had tweeted support for these protests, which led to a major rift, resulting in some Chinese broadcasters canceling NBA broadcasts.

After the backlash, Morey deleted his tweet and clarified that he did not intend to provoke anger among his supporters in China. He insisted that his comments were merely one perspective on a very complicated issue.

Reports indicated that James was quite upset with Morey’s comments at the time. He commented upon returning to the U.S. that people lacking knowledge on such issues should refrain from discussing them.

On Monday, James again expressed his gratitude to Chinese fans for their warm reception. “Every time I visit, my family and I feel genuinely welcomed. I’m truly moved by the hospitality of my friends in China. I can only give my all in every match and thank everyone,” he said.

Gradually, it seems that Chinese broadcasters and streaming services are starting to re-engage with the NBA, which may signal a thawing of tensions that have characterized the last few years.
