Agreement Reached Between Trump Administration and South Korea After Hyundai Raid

The Trump administration has come to an agreement with South Korea following a recent raid on a Hyundai factory in Georgia. This operation led to the arrest of 475 individuals, the majority of whom are believed to be Korean nationals.

Last week, authorities from Homeland Security Investigations, along with various federal agencies, executed the raid as part of a lengthy investigation into “illegal employment practices and other serious violations of federal law.”

During a press conference, Stephen Schrank, the special agent overseeing HSIs in Georgia and Alabama, commented that those arrested are either in the U.S. illegally or in breach of their legal status. Schrank, alongside a representative from the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the majority of those detained were indeed Korean citizens.

This agreement, signed on Sunday, allows for the release of 300 workers from custody.

“We truly value your investment, and we urge you to recruit capable individuals legally to create leading-edge products,” said Schrank. “In exchange, we’d like to see a commitment to hiring and training American workers,” he added, emphasizing collaboration to enhance productivity.

South Korean President-elect Kang Hoon-Sik stated, “Thanks to quick responses from the pertinent agencies and businesses, we have concluded negotiations regarding the release of the detained workers. However, a few administrative steps remain before the chartered flight can leave to bring back the citizens.”

Trump also mentioned following the immigration operations at the factory, urging all foreign companies investing in the U.S. to adhere to local immigration regulations.

Hyundai later released a statement indicating that they are reviewing their employment practices to ensure compliance with legal standards. “This involves a comprehensive assessment of labor practices among contractors and subcontractors,” the statement noted.
