Restoration Team Visits Trump at White House
The crew responsible for the restoration of the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool had a lively visit with the president at the White House on Tuesday night. They were clearly enjoying the occasion.
During the visit, President Trump signed hats for all the workers, celebrating their successful efforts to clean the pool ahead of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The president humorously noted that under different leadership, the pool might end up dirty again, but he assured everyone it would remain in “perfect” condition throughout his presidency.
A video capturing their visit was shared on social media by Margo Martin, a communications advisor at the White House. She also mentioned that each worker received an official presidential challenge coin.
The renovation process was completed just last week and involved draining the pool, cleaning, repainting, sealing, and then refilling it. “This is a very sophisticated material with industrial strength meant to last 100 years,” the president remarked, praising the skilled workers, many of whom hailed from Oklahoma.
The material is described as thick, durable, and flexible, featuring a beautiful navy blue reminiscent of the American flag, he added.
After the pool reopening, Trump couldn’t help but express his excitement: “It’s really beautiful. You should see it. It’s incredible.” He lingered on the beauty of the renovation, which first opened in 1922. During Obama’s presidency, upgrades had included a new circulation and filtration system.
Furthermore, Trump noted that these renovations would help prevent any leaks in the future. “I’m very proud,” he said in the Oval Office, adding that he considers himself quite skilled in building and making things.
Initially projected to cost $1.8 million, the restoration expenses have risen to over $13 million. Notably, some historic preservationists have filed a lawsuit, claiming that the new blue coating altered the pool’s “historic character.”
