Captain Mike Bouchard May Enter Congressional Race in Michigan
With Rep. John James (R-Mich.) focusing on the governor’s mansion, a few conservatives in Michigan are keen to find a replacement for him in Congress, particularly for the 10th District. They seem to have identified a promising candidate—Captain Mike Bouchard, son of longtime Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard.
In July, a Super PAC known as Draft Captain Mike Bouchard revealed a list of backers hoping to convince the 31-year-old Michigan Army National Guard captain to run for the position, potentially succeeding James. Originally, 19 names were on that list, including his father and other prominent figures like Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido and Macomb County Treasurer Larry Rocca.
“He’s a true American warrior,” one supporter noted.
Since then, that list of supporters has expanded to 32, now including rock icon Ted Nugent, former Michigan governor John Engler, and ex-state attorney general Bill Schuette, according to a press release shared with media outlets.
Sheriff Bouchard, who has led the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office since 1999, expressed excitement about his son’s possible candidacy, stating, “My son is… a great guy and is very qualified to do this.” He added, “From a young age, he wanted to serve in the military. He is deeply committed to making a difference for this country.” His father emphasized that he sees his son transitioning into public service in a new capacity.
Captain Bouchard is currently deployed overseas but is expected to return home this fall, and attempts to reach him for comments were unsuccessful.
Other conservatives seem eager for Bouchard to enter the race. Nugent shared his enthusiasm, recalling hearing about Bouchard’s potential candidacy while performing in Macomb County. “I couldn’t be more excited! He’s serving abroad now, and I know he will be a relentless advocate for us in Washington,” Nugent remarked.
Schuette also voiced his support, stating, “I am proud to back Captain Mike Bouchard for Congress. Having worked in Congress, I understand what it takes to succeed and serve Michigan—and Mike has those skills.”
A spokesperson for Rep. James commented on the shifting political landscape in Michigan’s 10th District, observing that Republicans are likely to maintain control of the seat, given the current dynamics and budding candidates.
Several other Republicans are also considering a run for this crucial district located just north of Detroit, including Rep. Joe Aragona and former GOP chairman in Oakland County, reported sources.
