Criticism for Bears’ New Coach after Fourth Quarter Collapse

Ben Johnson, the new head coach for the Chicago Bears, has faced criticism following a fourth-quarter lead loss in his debut game against the Minnesota Vikings. NFL great Peyton Manning, who co-hosts ESPN’s “Manningcast” during Monday Night Football, commented on Johnson’s decision-making during a critical moment after Caleb Williams threw a touchdown pass to Rome Odunze.

The Bears scored a touchdown with 2:02 left on the clock, still holding onto one timeout. Some experts think it might have been strategic to keep the ball out of bounds on the kickoff, which could have helped stop the clock. However, the kick went to Vikings returner Ty Chandler, allowing Minnesota’s head coach Kevin O’Connell to burn the two-minute warning, leaving the Bears with little time to respond on their next possession.

Manning expressed his disapproval, suggesting that the Bears should have kicked it out of bounds.

O’Connell mentioned post-game that situational football had been a focal point for his team, which, in hindsight, points toward missed opportunities for the Bears. The need for better situational awareness seemed critical.

When questioned about the decision to kick and not attempt a side kick, Johnson later conceded that sending the ball into the end zone wasn’t what they intended. He reflected on the outcome and acknowledged the oversight.

In the end, the Bears’ defense gave up 21 points in that crucial fourth quarter, leading to a disappointing 27-24 loss for Chicago.
