Texas Democrat James Talarico Launches Senate Campaign
Texas Democrat James Talarico officially announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, aiming to challenge Colin Allred, who previously ran unsuccessfully in 2024.
Talarico, a former student at Elder Seminary, advocates for transgender rights and introduces himself as an underdog in this race, which could pose a significant challenge to Allred. Recent polling suggests he may have a solid chance. Talarico has been vocal about distancing himself from national Democratic figures, signaling concerns over the party’s reputation in Texas. He has previously hesitated to support Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, reflecting a broader dissatisfaction among Texas Democrats.
“If Texans trust me with this responsibility, I want to engage with all candidates in the majority leader’s circle and discuss plans to mitigate the influence of wealthy individuals on our political landscape,” Talarico said in an interview, explaining his careful approach toward Schumer.
At 36, Talarico has been part of the Texas House of Representatives since 2018, following a career as a public school teacher. Although he has never campaigned statewide, his profile has been raised due to national attention, particularly during mid-term protests against Republican redistricting. He appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast last July and is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity at Austin Presbyterian Seminary, having degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and Harvard.
Talarico is eager for a fresh perspective within the Democratic Party, especially as its approval ratings have reportedly reached a historic low. “I think what I bring is a little different,” he mentioned. “This country seems to be craving a reset within the Democratic Party—something new, something fresh, something distinctly different. That’s what I can offer.”
The Democratic nominee will face significant challenges against incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn, who is seeking his fifth term. Cornyn is currently engaged in a tight race with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, with recent polls indicating a narrower margin.
Since 1994, Texas Democrats have struggled to secure victories in statewide elections.
Notably, perennial candidate Beto O’Rourke has not excluded the possibility of participating in major races, while astronaut Terry Burch is also entering the Democratic primary.
