Charlie Sheen Opens Up About His Journey Through Addiction
This week, Charlie Sheen shares his experiences with addiction in both his new memoir and a Netflix documentary. He talks about the challenges he faced, how he ended up drinking, and the people who supported him throughout his journey.
The former star of Two and a Half Men appeared on Live with Kelly and Mark recently, where he discussed his documentary, as well as his book titled Scene.
During his appearance, Sheen recalled an event he initially thought was a birthday party for his father, Martin Sheen. In reality, it was his own intervention.
“I was searching for something to celebrate,” he reflected, “but the party just… wasn’t there.”
He described the “cleverly organized group of people” who had gathered in the living room.
“I recognized most of them,” he continued, “but it was a bizarre mix. I mean, why was my seventh-grade history teacher, Mr. Vincent, at a party I hadn’t seen him at for, what, 15 years?”
After the clip concluded, Lipa responded, calling the documentary “an emotional roller coaster.”
“We cheered for you, cried for you, and were even scared of you at times,” she noted. “It really brought up a lot of your past, but it was hilarious how you talked about your intervention.”
Consuelos chimed in, explaining that it had happened “really early” that Saturday morning, which is why Sheen was confused.
“You show up and quickly realize it’s not a birthday party,” he added.
Sheen joked about the warning signs he should have noticed, mentioning the absence of balloons and how his mother had stopped him in the driveway, asking about a gun. “That’s not how I celebrate,” he laughed.
He further recounted in his book that he felt like he had stepped into the worst episode of This is Your Life, with familiar faces like Vincent, Rob Lowe, and his family all present.
After several people spoke, he recalled a moment when his father’s voice came through on the phone, saying, “Someone needs to talk to you.”
“It was Clint Eastwood, unmistakably,” he said. “He told me, ‘It’s a speed bump, kid. You have to adjust.’”
Lipa reacted dramatically, exclaiming that the moment scared her. To which Sheen replied, “It’s hard to say no to Dirty Harry, right?” This reference tied back to his father’s role in Apocalypse Now and Eastwood’s character in the Dirty Harry series.
He added, with a hint of irony, that the night of his intervention clashed with a plan for him and Nicolas Cage to judge a Hawaiian bikini contest in Palm Springs.
Consuelos joked about the unfortunate timing, and Sheen acknowledged that if he had “settled down a day or two later,” it would’ve been different.
“But we went ahead with the intervention,” he admitted, “and since then, I’ve made a lot of progress.” He noted that he has been sober for nearly eight years and received applause from the studio audience when he mentioned it.
Lipa celebrated his achievements, saying, “Isn’t it wonderful to have a reason to celebrate?”
Sheen agreed, thanking her. The show, Live with Kelly and Mark, airs weekdays. The documentary Also Known as Charlie Sheen is set to premiere on Netflix on September 10th.
