Father on the run in New Zealand dies after four years, three children found safe

A fugitive who had been on the run for nearly four years with his three children was shot and killed by police in New Zealand on Monday. This incident marks the conclusion of a significant manhunt in the country.

Authorities report that Tom Phillips vanished with the kids just before Christmas in 2021. Phillips was shot dead during an attempted robbery at a supply store, where one of his children was present. Thankfully, his children, aged 9, 10, and 12, were found safe and are now in care.

Jill Rogers, deputy vice-committee, commented on the emotional development, expressing relief that the children are safe and finally have access to care after almost four years. She thanked everyone involved for ending the family’s prolonged suffering.

Earlier in the day, police had received a tip-off about a break-in at a store in Piopio, a small town on New Zealand’s North Island where Phillips had been hiding. Upon arriving at the scene, officers spotted two individuals on quad bikes. They suspected Phillips was involved and deployed road spikes to intercept them.

During the confrontation, Phillips fired at the police, injuring an officer. Officers then returned fire, resulting in Phillips’s death. The child with him was unharmed, and the injured officer was taken to a hospital for treatment.

In the aftermath, authorities located the remaining two children alone in a camp about a mile away from the shooting site. Officials had been increasingly worried about the children’s welfare, as they had been isolated without access to education or healthcare for years.

Despite several reported sightings over the years, police efforts to locate Phillips and the children had been unsuccessful. After the shooting, police found three firearms at the scene, as well as additional weapons in his camp, which were believed to have been used during the incident.

Phillips was already facing charges related to robbery, serious injury, and illegal firearm possession prior to the confrontation.

The children’s mother, Cat, expressed mixed feelings about the news of Phillips’s death, referring to a “wave of complex emotions.” She emphasized her concern for the children, saying they had been overlooked during their time away and looked forward to welcoming them back into a loving home. Cat mentioned that the children had faced a difficult journey and requested privacy as they work on reintegrating into a stable environment.
