Jake Moody is no longer with the 49ers.
The team decided to part ways with the kicker on Tuesday following yet another rough performance against the Seahawks just the day before, as reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
During the game, Moody notably missed a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter of San Francisco’s 17-13 win in Seattle. In the third quarter, he had a kick that was blocked, which many viewed as the last straw for his position.
This isn’t the first time Moody has faced difficulties; his kicking struggles have persisted since last season, where he converted just 24 of 34 field goal attempts. In the last three games of 2024, his performance dipped further—he made only two out of six attempts and failed to convert extra point tries.
Drafted in the third round in 2023, Moody actually had a pretty decent rookie season, successfully kicking 21 out of 25 field goals. However, during the offseason, he made mechanical adjustments, moving from a three-stage approach to a two-stage one, I guess hoping for better results.
Reportedly, after his second miss on Sunday, the 49ers coaching staff expressed their frustrations. Fox’s Pam Oliver mentioned that frustration was palpable on the sidelines, with players visibly upset and some helmets being thrown.
Despite the troubles, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan seemed to try to support Moody, saying he had “no doubt” about the kicker’s abilities.
Shanahan commented afterwards that he’d assess everything before making any final decisions. “You can ask me again tomorrow,” he said. He continued, taking a broader view of the issue: “We clearly need to improve our entire kicking operation. It’s not solely about Jake; it’s the whole setup.”
