The NFL has come down with a decision regarding Jalen Carter after he spat on Dak Prescott in the season’s opening game last Thursday.
Carter has been fined $57,222 and suspended for one game, which the league considers already served since he didn’t participate in any plays.
A press release from the NFL on Tuesday stated, “Carter was disqualified before he took part in one play, so the suspension counts as served in week one.”
To keep the suspension clear, Carter is anticipated to return for the Eagles during their Super Bowl rematch in Week 2.
“After discussions with the Eagles, NFL, and NFLPA, Jalen decided not to dwell on the Chiefs game,” stated Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, citing Adam Schefter from ESPN.
Just six seconds into the Eagles’ 24-20 win over the Cowboys, Carter received a sportsmanlike conduct penalty and was removed from the game before he even snapped the ball.
Shortly after kickoff, he had words with Prescott and then spat in the direction of the Dallas quarterback.
After the game, Carter acknowledged the incident as “a mistake on my part. It won’t happen again.”
“Only my teammates and the fans feel bad about this,” he added. “I’m doing it for them. I’m also thinking about my family. But the fans—they really showed a lot of love.”
Reports suggest Carter reacted after Prescott spat toward him first.
Carter reportedly confronted Prescott, asking, “Would you spit at me?”
Prescott denied any intention to provoke after the match.
“I actually said ‘What the heck’—maybe even more colorful words,” Prescott explained. “He spits at me in that moment, which surprised me. The refs caught it and penalized us. But they didn’t realize he was getting kicked out.”
