Trump’s Nomination of Rebecca Tableson Raises Questions

President Donald Trump’s nomination of Rebecca Tableson as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals has sparked discussions regarding her alignment with the administration’s conservative principles, especially considering both her and her husband’s financial contributions to Democratic causes.

During Trump’s initial term, there were several judicial appointments that didn’t quite align with the administration’s goals. This mismatch led to significant legal challenges and hindered policy progress. Trump himself admitted to being “very disappointed” with some of these appointments, attributing the issues to “bad advice” he received regarding judicial nominations.

“She brings an extraordinary legal heart and a firm commitment to interpreting the law as written, rather than bending it to fit the political agenda,” said Mike Davis, an ally of Trump and founder of the Article III Project.

Davis mentioned that Trump’s second term has been “bolder,” stating that the current nominees are “combat tested.” Trump announced Tableson’s nomination in August, expressing his honor in appointing her as a judge for the Seventh Circuit, highlighting her extensive experience as a former Attorney General in Eastern Wisconsin and her work as an assistant to the U.S. Attorney General.

According to Trump, Tableson has learned from some of the most respected legal minds, including serving as a secretary for Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Antonin Scalia. He emphasized her strong dedication to the Constitution.

At 42, Tableson meets all the required qualifications for a JD from Yale, but her political contributions are under scrutiny. Her critics quickly pointed out that both she and her husband have made donations to Democratic candidates over the years.

In 2022, Tableson donated to Joe Manchin, a former Democratic senator from West Virginia, and in 2024, she contributed to a Democratic nominee for a judgeship in Wisconsin. Yet, it’s noteworthy that she has also supported Republican candidates like Mike Gallagher.

Her husband, Benjamin Tableson, made donations during the 2020 election to candidates opposing Trump and also supported Kamala Harris during her Senate campaign.

Despite these donations raising eyebrows among some conservatives, Davis and the Article III Project have expressed support for Tableson. He praised Trump for sticking to his pledge of appointing bold judges who uphold the Constitution and the rule of law.

Tableson’s conservative supporters point to her time working in the Attorney General’s office during the Trump administration, while critics are quick to note that she remained in her position under the Biden administration until 2022, even defending Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan in court.

As her confirmation process moves forward, various aspects of Tableson’s past could spark ongoing debates around whether Trump is genuinely following through on his promise to appoint judges who embody his vision of bold constitutionalism.
