Xander Schauffele Prioritizes Family Over Procore Championship
Xander Schauffele won’t be competing in the Procore Championship alongside his Ryder Cup teammates, and it’s for a very personal reason: he’s at home cherishing time with his newborn son.
The 31-year-old golfer shared with the Associated Press that his wife, Maya, recently gave birth to a son named Victor. It’s certainly a joyful time for the couple.
Schauffele had a remarkable 2024 season, securing victories at both the PGA Championship and the Open. However, it’s been a mixed year for fans from California, as he faced some setbacks earlier due to a rib injury that kept him out for a few months.
Despite these challenges, Schauffele has maintained his competitive edge, successfully making every 36-hole cut. He finished in the top ten for both the Masters and the Open, which are two of the four major tournaments, though he didn’t crack the top five.
His achievements during the season earned him an automatic spot on the Ryder Cup team, marking his third appearance in this prestigious event.
Interestingly, another member of the US Ryder Cup team, Bryson Dechambeau, also opted out of the Procore Championship, mainly due to his status outside the PGA Tour.
Before this recent development, Schauffele expressed some uncertainty about participating in the Napa event, mentioning his need for a break largely hinged on the timing of Victor’s arrival.
“If you don’t think performance will help me, I won’t play,” he stated during the BMW Championship.
The Ryder Cup is set to commence on September 26th. The US team will be looking to turn the tables on Europe after their loss at Beth Page Black in 2023.
