Trump Dines Out in D.C. Amid Crime Crackdown
President Trump ventured into Washington, D.C. on Tuesday for dinner with members of his cabinet, celebrating what he described as the “magnificent” results of his efforts to enhance safety in the capital.
This outing to Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab, a high-end restaurant just a block from the White House, marked the first time Trump has dined outside the White House since he began his second term.
Trump commented on the improvements in safety. “We’re standing in the middle of D.C. You know, last year was very unsafe. It’s been a tough spot for, well, quite a while.” He continued, “I certainly wouldn’t have done this a year ago; it was one of the least secure cities in the country. Now it’s as safe as being in the countryside.”
Accompanied by Vice President J.D. Vance, War Secretary Pete Hegses, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump encouraged the locals to “go out” and enjoy the city as crime rates have reportedly decreased. He expressed gratitude to the National Guard and D.C. Mayor Muriel Kuppers for their collaboration on safety initiatives.
“The restaurant is thriving now. People are coming out for dinners they haven’t had in years,” Trump noted, adding, “The results are truly spectacular. We have a very safe capital.”
As he arrived, Trump was met with a mix of boos and cheers from onlookers across the street.
Some demonstrators expressed their discontent with chants like “Free D.C! Free Palestine! Trump is Hitler of our time!” while waving a small Palestinian flag. Despite the ruckus, Trump appeared unaffected.
A woman protesting was escorted away by law enforcement as Trump entered the restaurant.
The dinner came after a recent press conference where Trump was questioned about his reluctance to dine out during his terms. His rebuttal was sharp: “Do you want me to prove you wrong?”
He added, “I think that’s something we can consider doing, and I love doing that. I enjoy White House food, but, you know, after a while…” He paused, reflecting, “I saw them going to nice restaurants. It’s safe.”
Before settling in for dinner, Trump teased an upcoming announcement that would likely occur the following day, mentioning plans to engage with governors and mayors in various states about improving local safety.
He previously entertained the idea of dispatching troops to cities like Chicago, Baltimore, and New Orleans to aid in fighting crime alongside local authorities.
