Qatar Threatens Retaliation Following Airstrike on Hamas Leaders
Qatar has issued a warning about potential retaliation against Israel after a bombing in Doha that targeted Hamas leaders. The country’s prime minister referred to the developments as a crucial juncture for the Middle East.
“Qatar reserves the right to respond and is committed to taking decisive actions,” the prime minister stated, as translated by a news organization based in Qatar.
He condemned the Israeli strike on Hamas, labeling it as “national terrorism” and criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach. “I think we’ve reached a turning point. The entire region should respond to these reckless actions,” he said, adding that such behavior reveals a lack of stability in the leadership.
Concerns Grow Over U.S. Relations
The White House has shared that President Trump instructed diplomats to warn Qatar ahead of the Israeli action. An official mentioned that the U.S. had been informed of Israel’s military intentions targeting Hamas, which had been operating from parts of Doha.
“This morning, the Trump administration received notifications about Israel’s imminent attack,” stated White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt. She further remarked that such unilateral actions in Qatar could undermine diplomatic efforts.
Details on Targets Emerge
Israeli media reported that Khalil Al-Hayya and Zaher Jabarin were among the targets of the airstrike that rocked Doha. Al-Hayya had recently made statements regarding a ceasefire in Gaza, while Jabarin is a significant figure within Hamas’ financial operations, though his role had not been prominently recognized in negotiations.
Hamas released a declaration, asserting that Israel’s attempts to eliminate its leaders were unsuccessful.
The U.S. administration recognized that while eliminating Hamas is a desirable goal, the manner of operation—especially in a sovereign state like Qatar—could complicate diplomatic relationships. A spokesperson from Qatar’s Foreign Ministry later refuted claims that the country had been informed about the attack beforehand.
In a bittersweet reflection, the situation highlights the delicate balance of power and ongoing tensions in the region, with implications likely extending beyond immediate retaliatory measures. The unfolding events could lead to a significant shift in diplomatic relations, not just between Qatar and Israel, but involving the U.S. as well.
