Discussion on Illinois’ Assault Weapons Ban

Hermeet Dillon, a civil rights aide from the Trump administration, is set to address Illinois’ ban on “assault weapons” later this month. This discussion will take place in the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Reportedly, the Department of Justice is collaborating with gun rights organizations to challenge the legislation supported by Governor Pritzker, which was enacted in response to the tragic shooting at the Highland Park parade in July 2022.

Interestingly, the coverage hasn’t mentioned that Mike Bloomberg was part of the gun safety initiative, ranked as one of the states with the sixth-highest gun control at the time of the incident. These measures included the Red Flag Act, mandatory waiting periods for gun purchases, firearm owner identification (FOID) card requirements, and regulations related to domestic violence and open carry.

The assailant in Highland Park was in compliance with all stringent Illinois gun laws, possessing a FOID card and legally purchasing firearms.

Highland Park has its own set of regulations, which ban “assault weapons” and large-capacity magazines, but these controls did not prevent the massacre. In response, Governor Pritzker signed a statewide prohibition on “assault weapons,” effectively restricting most Illinois residents from owning widely used semi-automatic rifles.

In June, Dillon highlighted that President Donald J. Trump directed the administration to uphold the Second Amendment rights of all Americans. As the month progresses, she will actively defend against the ban on “assault weapons.”
