Gould’s Stance on Crypto and Banking
In the recent weeks, Jonathan Gould, who oversees the Secretary of Currency, has been quite clear about his stance on the removal of crypto entities from banking connections.
“Dabaghking is legitimate,” he stated to attendees at a Coindesk regulatory event in Washington, D.C. this past Wednesday.
Appointed by President Donald Trump, Gould is part of a team of regulators that supports digital assets, aiming to position the U.S. as a key player in the global crypto arena. He mentioned how he sought to amend restrictive licensing terms against cryptocurrencies and has initiated work on regulations for Stablecoins.
Earlier this week, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) released a statement, asserting efforts to eliminate political influences and unlawful withdrawals from the federal banking system. Other sectors with risk and reputational concerns have faced banking challenges, though crypto insiders have found themselves particularly impacted.
Gould expressed enthusiasm about launching a significant initiative for drafting necessary regulations, seeking to drive national innovation in the U.S. He noted that the OCC serves as a federal overseer for U.S. issuers of certain foreign stubcoins. According to him, the licensing process for crypto firms aspiring to be chartered as banks has advanced this week. This information was communicated directly from his office.
“Historically, we’ve adopted strategies to mitigate risks or at least have attempted to, aiming to keep banks distanced from this entirely,” Gould remarked. As a former executive at Bitfury, he indicated that he had been hesitant about allowing the OCC to become involved in the crypto sector.
While traditional banking frameworks are understandably apprehensive regarding stubcoin regulations—fearing potential weakening of core deposit systems—some experts believe these worries may be overstated. They suggest that similar products, like money market funds, will continue to thrive and not threaten the bank’s foundation.
