A Joint Venture to Enhance Healthcare Accessibility
Oakland, California, and Reno, Nevada, September 10, 2025 – Kaiser Permanente has joined forces with Renown Health to co-manage a health plan and outpatient care initiative that will expand Kaiser Permanente’s reach into northern Nevada. This partnership is set to launch in 2026.
The main goal of this collaboration is to improve access to quality, value-based healthcare. It aims to make affordably priced care options more available to the residents of northern Nevada.
Greg A. Adams, the Chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, stated, “Our mission drives us to provide quality, affordable healthcare to more people and communities. We’ve been hearing requests from our members, employers, and physicians for a tailored value-based care offering in Nevada for some time.” He emphasized that working with big healthcare providers in the northern part of the state will allow them to care for a larger population, assist more employers, and bolster the health of the growing community.
“I’m excited to announce this partnership in Nevada, which will enhance access to affordable care and coverage,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, the President and CEO of Renown Health. He explained that combining their health plan with Kaiser Permanente would broaden access to high-quality insurance coverage throughout Nevada. This collaboration aims to boost local healthcare capabilities while harnessing the scale and knowledge of national leaders, ultimately offering more options and better coverage for families and employers.
With a booming economy and a growing population, Reno is becoming the second-largest metropolitan area in Nevada, outpacing national growth rates.
This agreement, pending regulatory approval, will have Kaiser Permanente providing health plan options for businesses and individuals in northern Nevada, with open enrollment set to begin in 2026.
By integrating with Renown’s established health insurance division, Hometown Health, Kaiser Permanente is well-positioned to meet the needs of local consumers who want accessible, affordable care nearby. The plan includes launching a multi-specialty outpatient healthcare system in the central and northern regions of Reno, where patients can expect access to various specialties, diagnostics, pharmacies, and support services at both new and existing facilities, including the Del Monte Senior Care Plus Clinic.
Renown Health has been a prominent healthcare system in Nevada since 1988, operating major community health services. It’s known for being the largest locally governed, nonprofit academic healthcare network in the region, covering areas like Lake Tahoe and parts of northern California. Renown Health will remain an independent nonprofit and continues to accept all current health insurance plans.
Through this partnership, Kaiser Permanente will take a majority interest in Renown Health. However, existing plans and networks will remain unchanged at the outset. The deal is expected to finalize in early 2026, pending the necessary regulatory approvals.
