Mace confronts Jacobs on House floor regarding 'breast jobs as gender-affirming care' remark

Contentious Exchange in House Over Gender-Affirming Care

On Wednesday, a heated exchange erupted on the House floor between Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) and Rep. Sarah Jacobs (D-Calif.) regarding comments made about breast enhancement being categorized as gender-affirming care.

This clash occurred during discussions about amendments to the annual defense appropriations bill, where Mace was advocating for anti-transgender amendments. These amendments aimed to restrict access to gender-affirming care under the military’s TRICARE health program.

Jacobs addressed the House, noting, “It’s striking that some colleagues from South Carolina seem obsessed with slandering trans individuals, especially when many here are accessing gender-affirming care themselves.”

She continued, stating, “Fillers, breast enhancements, and Botox are all forms of gender-affirming care. Many in this chamber are benefiting from such care, and everyone should have access to it.”

As Jacobs spoke, Mace, who was at a distance within the chamber, could be heard reacting vocally, expressing her frustration with Jacobs’ comments about “my body.”

“This is absurd,” Mace retorted. “Completely ridiculous. What’s your issue?”

Mace added, “I just don’t like you. You’re being insulting.”

Jacobs then requested that Mace’s remarks be stricken from the official record, but no further action was taken, as Mace was not formally recognized to address the matter during the incident.

Mace, who has previously shared her personal story of sexual assault and her stance against trans rights, took to social media to criticize Jacobs further.

“To @Repsarajacobs, I mentioned women’s safety, and your response was to make it personal about my body. Survivors know that some women might alter their appearance due to trauma from sexual violence,” Mace tweeted.

In a somewhat indifferent tone, she added, “If you’re interested in cosmetic surgery, there are skilled surgeons available,” addressing her remarks towards Jacobs.

In response, Jacobs expressed sympathy on social media, remarking, “I feel sad for you. Attacking trans kids while claiming to protect women is misguided. I hope you find the support you need.”
