Political Violence Condemned After Charlie Kirk’s Death
The Illinois governor, a Democrat, criticized political violence following the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, arguing that President Donald Trump often contributes to this atmosphere. Kirk, who co-founded Turning Point USA, was fataly shot at an event on the Utah Valley University campus on Wednesday. He was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately, later succumbed to his injuries.
“I want to express my condolences to Charlie Kirk’s family and, of course, to him,” Governor Pritzker said during a press conference. “I can’t say for sure if this incident is politically motivated… but it’s clear political violence is escalating in our country. We’ve seen recent shootings and murders related to political affiliations in various states, including Minnesota.”
“We need to address this, and I believe certain individuals in this country are fanning the flames,” he continued. “I mean, the president’s statements often seem to endorse this kind of behavior. The Jan. 6 events revealed a troubling trend towards political violence. What message does this send to those inclined to act out violently?”
The governor referred to a case where Vance Berter was accused of killing a Democratic couple in Minneapolis and also attempting to harm Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his family. This incident is among several instances of political violence that seem to be on the rise. Just last year, Trump faced two assassination attempts, and Nancy Pelosi’s husband was attacked with a hammer.
“No one should have to worry about gun violence, whether they’re in high school or attending university events,” Pritzker remarked on social media later.
In reaction to the governor’s remarks, former Republican Illinois Senator Darren Bailey, who plans to challenge Pritzker in the upcoming gubernatorial race, criticized him for blaming Trump and the events of January 6 rather than just denouncing the attack on Kirk. “Pritzker, who has had everything handed to him, failed to show true leadership after Kirk’s violent attack,” Bailey stated.
“Illinois deserves a leader who takes accountability and upholds freedom of speech,” he added. “Unfortunately, Pritzker has repeatedly shown he doesn’t fulfill that role.”
