House Intelligence Panel to Review 9/11 Committee Recommendations
On Thursday, the House Intelligence Panel announced plans for a bipartisan examination of the recommendations in the 9/11 committee report.
This decision comes as the nation marks 24 years since the September 11, 2001, attacks, and will be led by Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who chairs the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence regarding these attacks.
“As a senior member of the House Intelligence Committee and proud to be from New York, I am honored to chair this review of the 9/11 Committee Report,” Stefanik stated.
The review will primarily look at the 2004 findings published by the National Committee on Terrorist Attacks on the United States and evaluate how they can better prepare for potential future terrorist threats.
Part of this inquiry involves the establishment of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which aims to coordinate responses to these threats, along with reviewing relevant records from intelligence offices.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford (R-Ark.) remarked, “The 9/11 attacks have significantly transformed how the United States approaches security and international engagement.” He noted the profound unity displayed among Americans following the attacks and emphasized the importance of learning from past intelligence failures to safeguard national security.
As the country prepares to recognize the 25th anniversary of this tragic day next year, Crawford stressed the pressing need for the intelligence community to stay ahead of evolving threats. “While the nature of these threats may have changed, our mission remains constant,” he added.
Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), the leading Democrat on the panel, highlighted the ongoing impact of 9/11. “Even 24 years later, we are committed to honoring the victims by ensuring the safety of Americans and preventing future attacks,” he said. He acknowledged significant restructuring within the intelligence community since the attacks and expressed hope for a thorough bipartisan review to identify areas for continued improvement.
Additionally, Rep. Josh Gotzimer (D-NJ) will join Stefanik, Crawford, and Himes in leading the review as one of the Democratic co-chairs.
