Gun reform could secure Trump the midterms and a unique legacy

The President has never imposed strict control over his party in Congress. Donald Trump has significantly altered traditional Republican views on issues like tariffs, NATO, and Ukraine, and legislators seem to follow his lead without any second thoughts.

This situation presents an opportunity. If Trump decides to pursue it, he has the chance to bring about genuine gun reform—something that past presidents haven’t managed to do.

This could prove pivotal, potentially leading to a significant shift in Democratic fortunes by 2026 and cementing his legacy. If he opts for gun reform, Congress will back him. Next November, we might witness another noticeable shift on the political map.

The recent shooter in Minneapolis legally acquired his firearm, highlighting systemic failures. There were no warning signs or safeguards in place, and unfortunately, that’s the crux of the issue. The system functioned as intended, yet the tragedy still unfolded.

Although background checks, red flags, and secure storage regulations can’t prevent every act of violence, they are essential to change the odds. These laws are designed to safeguard children and return them safely to their families after school.

Let me be clear: if Trump manages to curb school shootings, I, along with many other mothers, would be eager to commemorate him at Mount Rushmore. It would be monumental.

This is why Trump not only has the potential to redefine the gun debate by overcoming the gun lobby but also alters the political landscape.

For years, this issue has been a key element for Democrats—one that could vanish almost overnight. They would find it challenging to argue against it, leaving the media scrambling to react.

There’s a historical parallel here. Following the events of 9/11, George W. Bush and the Republican Congress passed the Patriot Act. Democrats didn’t resist, and Republicans leveraged this to grow their influence in 2002.

Trump could achieve something similar with bold gun reform initiatives. It could define his presidency and rally a majority behind him.

We thought such a moment might occur after the Sandy Hook tragedy when first graders lost their lives in a classroom. That felt like a tipping point. But, unfortunately, it wasn’t.

That day revealed Congress’s unpreparedness. However, if the President points out this reality, Congress could be ready now.

For years, Republicans have been under the thumb of the National Rifle Association, fearing a backlash that could cost them votes. But the NRA is facing challenges now, impacted by scandals and a decline in membership. The real concern for Republicans today may lie with the President himself.

That’s where things change—they will find support for reform. A significant majority of Americans are in favor of tighter gun regulations.

Slightly over 80% back universal background checks. Even many Republicans are on board with ideas like red flag laws.

This landscape creates a unique opportunity for Trump to position himself and his party advantageously, potentially leaving Democrats at a loss for words. Just picture Republicans campaigning on school safety in 2026. It’s a powerful platform.

Trump sees the potential here; he’s looking for a legacy beyond just judicial appointments or tax cuts. He wants to be remembered.

If he could disrupt this ongoing cycle of children fearing for their safety, it would be a legacy that’s hard to criticize. His credibility would not just soar domestically but internationally, where America’s gun violence is viewed as a significant issue.

His mantra has always been about putting America first. What better way to embody that than to ensure the safety of American children? If America is top priority, then safety should be paramount.

Right now, though, the nation is in distress. Nearly 47,000 Americans lost their lives to gun-related incidents in 2023 through various means. The gun homicide rate here dwarfs that of other affluent nations—over 25 times greater.

Mass shootings have become so routine that children undergo drills just like fire safety training. Allies caution their citizens about the risks of gun violence in the U.S.

Now, Trump has a chance to disrupt this cycle, take on the Democrats, and establish his place in history. He should approach reforms as a show of strength, promoting order and triumph rather than simply echoing liberal sentiments. He holds the key to truly addressing America’s gun violence crisis.
