Earlier this month, Donald Trump shared his plans to attend a New York Yankees game against the Detroit Tigers on the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
While Trump has a history of attending various sporting events, he hasn’t participated in any baseball games during his second term.
Back in 2019, he attended Game 5 of the World Series between the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros. He was also present for the World Series matchup between the Astros and the Atlanta Braves in 2021, which was about a year after he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden.
In 2020, Trump had intended to throw out the first pitch at a Yankees game, but those plans were sidetracked by the pandemic.
The Yankees have advised fans to allow extra time for entry, as security measures are heightened at Yankee Stadium. Normally, gates open an hour and a half before the first pitch, but for this Thursday game scheduled at 7:05 PM, they will open at 4 PM.
Fans are also encouraged to use public transportation due to road closures and restrictions on items allowed inside the stadium.
In a related note, security may be increased following the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah. The Yankees observed a moment of silence for him at the game.
Trump’s attendance follows his speech at the Pentagon’s 9/11 ceremony, with Vice President JD Vance present in Lower Manhattan earlier that day. A pre-game ceremony is planned to honor the victims and heroes of the attack, though it’s unclear how, or if, Trump will participate.
The Yankees are facing the Detroit Tigers after losing the first two games of the series, as the Tigers are currently ahead in the AL Central standings.
