Local Leaders Respond to Immigration Enforcement in Chicago Area
In the Chicago area, mayoral and council candidates are standing against actions that hinder cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. This comes as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has initiated an “Operation Midway Blitz” in the region.
Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, a Democrat who is set to succeed retiring Rep. Jan Schakowsky in Illinois’ D-Ill, expressed concerns about the DHS’s plans, stating he feels “in the dark” about the upcoming actions. He addressed residents about his worries and the steps he is taking to mitigate risks.
“The Trump administration continues to create a climate of fear and uncertainty, and we felt that it was important to share what we know with our residents,” Biss stated, referring to information obtained from national officials.
Accountability of Local Police during ICE Raid
Biss emphasized that measures have been taken to ensure the protection of residents from federal law enforcement. “We have enacted strong sanctuary laws to prevent any collaboration between local police and federal immigration enforcement, long before Trump took office,” he noted.
After learning about data sharing practices, Biss ordered the shutdown of Evanston’s license plate cameras. Unlike red light cameras that issue tickets, these cameras mainly collect vehicle data, which law enforcement can later use to track individuals.
In recent statements, the Mayor condemned ICE raids, calling them “terrorism,” expressing the sentiment that “it feels like the Confederates have won” during this political climate.
When approached for more comment, Biss did not respond in time. However, he did mention during an appearance at the Mexican Independence Day Parade that he was vigilant about potential ICE personnel and utilized “quick response training” to protect attendees.
“I had to watch for any masked individuals or uniformed officers who might take action without warning against our community members,” he explained.
Community Solidarity and Historical Reflection
He urged people to remember the significance of their actions during this period, emphasizing the need to do what is right. In a response to accusations from the Republican National Committee regarding his interpretation of federal policies, Biss also made a reference to President Trump, saying, “When it comes to sabotaging things, what about the release of the Epstein Files?”
Biss concluded with a reminder of the importance of community solidarity, stating, “History will remember this moment in Chicago as a display of strength and unity.”
