Young conservatives share the significance of Charlie Kirk in their lives and their plans to continue promoting his message.

The assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has deeply impacted his young supporters, while simultaneously reinforcing his commitment to fostering student activism, as shared by sources who spoke with the Post.

For many in Generation Z, Kirk represented more than just a political leader. They feel that engaging in respectful conversations—regardless of differing views—has made them feel relevant, accepted, and, well, “cool” among their peers.

Here are some reflections on Kirk’s influence:

JT Marshburn, 19: Student in Politics at the University of Georgia

“Charlie Kirk embodied the First Amendment,” remarked J.T. Marshburn, the chair of his University Republican National Committee.

“He fought for our conservative beliefs, and ultimately, he lost his life for his commitment.”

Marshburn described Kirk’s founding of Turning Point USA at just 19 years old.

“Gen Z often feels lonely and confused, yet he worked to cultivate a community of like-minded individuals,” Marshburn added. “He will always be remembered as a stalwart advocate for free speech on campus.”

He emphasized that to honor Kirk’s legacy, conservatives must maintain their strength in beliefs and values.

“We won’t hide in fear of our beliefs,” he insisted. “We aim to advance our message, expand our party among Gen Z, and even reach those who oppose us.”

Ian Wei, 25: Graduate of George Mason University, Washington DC

Ian Wei highlighted Kirk’s unique ability to navigate controversies while engaging with a diverse audience.

“His ideas have gained traction on the right, but he was always open to discussing them and considering other viewpoints,” Wei explained. “He was an effective communicator, making complex ideas relatable and authentic.”

Wei noted that Kirk valued respectful dialogue, which feels increasingly crucial today.

“Nobody wants to live in a society where expressing beliefs can lead to violence,” he added.

At 31, Kirk was tragically shot on stage during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University as part of a national tour.

Naomi Speakman, 19: Law and Politics Student at Thomas More University, Kentucky

Naomi Speakman reflected on witnessing Kirk’s debates as a pivotal moment in her political growth.

“He made me realize that my voice as a young conservative mattered,” she shared. “It was surprising to hear someone boldly affirm their beliefs. Now, many conservatives on campus are asking, ‘How can I engage like Charlie Kirk did?'”

All the students interviewed expressed confidence in the lasting impact of Kirk’s legacy.

“People are tired of the status quo, and seeing him killed was like a breaking point,” Speakman stated.

“For conservatives, this isn’t the time to retreat. We’re determined to speak out.”

The individual identified as Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old former Utah Valley University student, was arrested Friday after confessing to the shooting.

Alegria Silvi, 18: Politics and Psychology Student at Columbia University, New York

At Columbia University, Kirk’s influence resonated strongly with conservative students like Alegria Silvi.

Silvi, who attended one of Kirk’s campus events, remarked that young conservatives have gained confidence to express their beliefs about faith and personal responsibility, even amid unpopularity.

“Discussing politics can be tough when views clash,” she noted. “Kirk’s stories made it easier for me to engage in political discussions without feeling overwhelmed.”

She appreciated Kirk’s openness and courage, aiming to embody those traits in her interactions.

Christina Ma, 20: English and Philosophy Student at Columbia University, New York

Christina Ma, vice president of the Columbia University Republicans, emphasized the transformative effect Kirk had on dialogue.

“When communication stops, dehumanization follows, and what happened to him illustrates that,” she said.

Ma expressed hope that Kirk’s legacy would encourage deeper discussions among people.

“He inspired me to engage in bipartisan dialogues,” she shared.

Kirk was remembered by Turning Point USA as a pivotal figure in American political discourse.

“Through meaningful conversations, we can challenge the culture that devalues human life and, sadly, leads to violence,” she concluded.

“I believe this moment can be a turning point, reminiscent of the very essence of the organization Kirk established.”

“More than anyone, Charlie championed the power of debate and constructive dialogue to foster understanding, even between differing opinions.”
