Noncitizens listed on voter rolls: Maine's secretary of state opposes calls for election transparency

Maine’s Voter Registration Scrutiny Intensifies

Maine is facing increased scrutiny regarding its voter registration rolls, despite ongoing efforts by Republicans nationwide to enhance election integrity. The Republican National Committee (RNC) is demanding greater accountability.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows is reportedly engaged in federal efforts to update voter registration details in accordance with the National Voter Registration Act.

In a recent complaint letter, RNC officials, including Attorney General Pam Bondi and chief advisor Mandy Lester, allege that Bellows has violated NVRA standards. They noted, “Even though we have confirmed that non-citizens are registered to vote in Maine elections, Shenna Bellows continues to block efforts to clean up voter rolls.”

On March 25, the RNC requested records related to Maine’s voter list maintenance system from Bellows’ office.

Bellows’ office acknowledged this request on May 4, but has not delivered any of the expected information. After a couple of months filled with silence and reminders from the RNC, on July 23, her office replied that providing the requested records would cost $23,000 and could take “36-48 months.”

The RNC criticized these terms, claiming they violate the NVRA’s commitment to transparency and public accountability.

Concerns about transparency appear to stem partly from Bellows’ assertion that her office could not fulfill voter information requests. The complaint mentions that the office had previously sent out a notice to update registration among voters who may have moved.

The issue was further complicated by comments from lawyer Mark Elias during a podcast, where Bellows acknowledged there are certainly non-citizens on the voter rolls due to issues like people not updating their voter registration when they move. RNC Chairman Joe Gruters stated, “The Bellows undermines Maine’s elections and betrays the trust of all Maine voters.”

As scrutiny from federal authorities grows, Bellows appears to view the investigation as a power violation.

The RNC ended their letter with a strong call for “immediate federal investigations” from the Department of Justice, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
