China Upset About Mexico's Cooperation with Trump on Trade

China Warns Mexico Over Potential Tariffs

On Friday, Bloomberg reported that China is warning Mexico against implementing hefty tariffs on Chinese goods, aligning more closely with President Donald Trump’s trade policies.

The Commerce Ministry of China stated that Mexico should reconsider its plan to impose a 50% tariff on vehicles and various products from China. The ministry’s announcement, as translated by Bloomberg, seemed to indicate that Mexico is bending to Trump’s influence rather than adopting its own independent trade strategies.

China’s response highlighted concerns over the unilateral tariff increases. According to a statement from the ministry, it urged Mexico to proceed with extreme caution and thoughtful consideration before making any decisions.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum defended these measures, asserting that they are intended to safeguard domestic industries and not to escalate tensions between China and Mexico. Trump, on the other hand, has been advocating for tariffs as a means to protect American industries, with China being a primary target.

Mexico has faced accusations from Trump’s administration of acting as a “back door” for the entry of Chinese products like fentanyl precursor chemicals. Despite this tension, Mexico and China maintain robust trade relations, with vehicles being a significant export from China to Mexico.

Additionally, Mexico primarily exports copper ore to China, which is essential for various electronic components. According to trade data from Chinese customs, Beijing holds a substantial trade surplus of $71 billion with Mexico, indicating it imports far less than it exports.

The Chinese embassy has not yet provided a response to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
