Hochul Calls for Apology from Mamdani

ALBANY — Governor Kathy Hochul asserted on Friday that Zohran Mamdani should apologize for labeling the NYPD as “racist.” This statement represents her most significant acknowledgment of responsibility toward the Democratic mayoral candidate.

“I think an apology is warranted,” Hochul remarked when questioned about Mamdani’s tepid promise to apologize. He issued an apology to officers on Thursday for his controversial remarks, as reported by a leading newspaper.

In a recent interview, Mamdani mentioned that his comments made during the summer of 2020 emerged from a place of deep frustration.

“There’s really no need for an investigation to confirm that the NYPD is racist, anti-Queer, and a serious threat to public safety,” Mamdani had tweeted on June 28, 2020.

During the interview, Mamdani hesitated when asked if he should apologize to the police, but eventually confirmed, “Yes.” However, he hasn’t yet fully addressed his earlier remarks regarding the controversial tweet, and while Hochul continues to voice support for Mamdani’s campaign, she emphasizes the importance of earning respect from police.

Hochul stated, “I respect them immensely. I’ve witnessed their actions firsthand, so I believe this is the right course of action.”

Mamdani has historically taken a strong stance against policing, especially following events surrounding a fatal shooting involving an NYPD officer in July. He previously expressed, “Together, we can tax the rich, heal the sick, and refund the police, building a socialist New York,” among other comments made on social media.

As Mamdani attempts to distance himself from previous statements, he reflected on how frustration over George Floyd’s murder influenced his past remarks.

Hochul, along with several prominent New York Democrats, has drawn lines between her policies and Mamdani’s platform, especially regarding taxation on the wealthy.

Former NYPD officer and current Mayor Eric Adams criticized Mamdani’s apology as insufficient, stating that an apology must go beyond mere words. “We can’t just put this into words,” he asserted.

Political analysts suggest Hochul’s call for Mamdani to apologize to the NYPD may be a strategic move, predicting that her actions reflect a desire to maintain support from law enforcement. Observers highlight that Mamdani’s comments could alienate moderate voters, particularly in areas like Long Island.

Political consultant Hank Shenkopf voiced concerns over potential repercussions, stating that every time Mamdani speaks, he risks creating support for Republican candidates in New York City.

Another political consultant noted that while Hochul may not win over all law enforcement, she is navigating the fine line of politics carefully. “Kathy Hochul is being astute. She’s aware of threats from both the right and left,” he remarked.
