Uncommon fish from another world appears on California beach: 'So strange and beautiful'

Rare fish have been spotted along a California beach, drawing the attention of onlookers who described the experience as “gorgeous” and otherworldly.

The striking sea creatures were found at Dolan Regional Park in Bodega Bay. While initial reports speculated they were sharks, experts later identified one of them as a rare earth moratector, a lesser-known subspecies of sunfish that can grow over nine feet long and weigh up to 4,400 pounds.

Stephen Keesby, a novelist and professor at Sonoma State University, remarked, “It’s sad that it washed up, but it was so huge and bizarre. It feels like being on another planet.”

Sadly, only one of the two fish that appeared on the beach managed to survive. Still, officials confirmed that human interactions would not lead to its demise.

A photo captures a massive moray fish lying on the sand, with a seagull nearby offering a sense of its scale.

Known as the “Hoodwinker Sunfish,” this species was first identified in 2017 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Scientists found it surprising, as these fish are mostly associated with the Southern Hemisphere.

Dr. Marianne Niegard stated that while the Mora Tecta typically comes from Humboldt currents near South America, its presence here was unexpected. “We didn’t think they would frequently cross the equator,” she noted. “But it’s possible they dive deeper and swim below the warm surface.”
