Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor Discusses Colleagues and New Book
On Tuesday, Justice Sonia Sotomayor expressed that, despite having differing views from her conservative colleagues on the Supreme Court, she aims to appreciate their strengths. “She taught me to find the best people,” Sotomayor reflected, crediting her mother for this lesson. “That’s what I want from my colleagues.”
During her appearance on Stephen Colbert’s show, she was there to showcase her new children’s book titled “Just Shine! How To Be Be Beate You.” When discussing her relationships on the court, she candidly said, “I don’t really agree with them, at least not the majority. They can be frustrating at times, and, sure, there are moments when I could just kick them out of the room, but I don’t.”
Sotomayor also joined “The View” where she touched on the significant 6-3 conservative majority on the court, particularly in light of recent controversial rulings like the overturning of Roe v. Wade. She warned about the potential consequences: “The price we pay will affect many people, as I have shown, what is happening today. But it will affect your future. It will affect the behavior of future leaders.”
Her remarks attracted attention, especially when asked by Sunny Hostin about the dangers of recent decisions. Sotomayor expressed concern, stating that changing legal precedents could lead to detrimental outcomes for various groups. “Every time you change the precedent, you change the outline of the rights people were thinking. Once you’ve taken it, think about how much you’re at risk later on. Not just this situation, but this situation,” she added.
Having been nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed in 2009, Sotomayor remains one of three justices on the current court who were nominated by Democrats.
