NY and NJ overlooked flag order for Charlie Kirk despite Trump’s instructions

New York and New Jersey did not issue orders to lower flags after the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Instead, they adhered to state protocols rather than following President Trump’s declaration.

Trump had signed an order on Wednesday, directing that flags be lowered until Sunday at 6 PM, referring to Kirk as “a truly great American patriot.”

The White House flag was lowered that same afternoon.

Nevertheless, in New Jersey, the Official State Flag Status was listed as “full staff,” and Bergen County maintained this stance. New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware also kept their flags at full staff, choosing not to comply with Trump’s order.

Several counties and municipalities in New Jersey followed a similar path. A representative from the Bergen County Executive Office stated that they are adhering to the state’s daily guidance. That day, the flags remained at full staff.

The county reiterated its stance through a Facebook post, emphasizing a commitment to “condemn political violence in all forms and reject hatred in all forms.”

This decision has upset conservatives, who feel the county is defying Trump.

“Bergen County Democrats opted not to lower the flag for Charlie Kirk’s assassination and are ignoring federal orders!” Republican commissioner candidate Jay Costa expressed on Instagram. “It’s outrageous! They’ll face consequences in November.”

Experts note that while presidents can mandate flag protocol on federal property, states and local governments are not obligated to comply.

“States, businesses, and individuals are making their own choices regarding federal guidance,” said Vexillologist Michael Green.

Kirk, 32, co-founded Turning Point USA and was recently filmed giving a speech at Utah Valley University. His death has ignited discussions and political debates nationwide.

Authorities have identified a 22-year-old suspect, Tyler Robinson. Federal agents are investigating various locations tied to him as the investigation unfolds.
