Bruce Willis and Emma Heming Navigate Communication in the Face of Dementia
Emma Heming, Bruce Willis’ wife, discussed their unique way of communicating as they deal with his frontotemporal dementia (FTD). In an interview with the Sunday Times, she expressed her emotional journey and the dynamics of their relationship.
“Bruce and I have developed our own language,” Heming shared. “It’s about just being with him, walking alongside him, and listening as he tries to express himself.”
Heming revealed that Willis, now 70, has faced challenges with word usage and comprehension linked to his condition. She mentioned that his personality noticeably shifted before his FTD diagnosis. “It wasn’t just sadness. It felt like waking up to a completely different person,” she reflected.
Moreover, she opened up about her choice to move Willis to a house across the street from her and their two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, aged 11 and 13. This decision allowed friends and family to interact with him without the constraints of managing expectations at home. “Seeing their responses makes a real difference,” she added.
Heming also discussed the evolving relationships between Willis’ daughter and him. She noted, “They’ve adapted to his illness in remarkable ways, learning how to navigate around him. It’s lovely, though it’s also hard for them. They miss the dad they once knew.”
In her upcoming book, “Unexpected Journey: Finding Yourself in the Path of Strength, Hope, and Care,” Heming writes about telling her daughters about their father’s move. She emphasizes that his care needs are changing and that it’s essential to adapt to those needs. “He would want them to enjoy playdates and sleepovers, and that thought brings him happiness,” she said.
Heming admitted that while this decision for Bruce’s care felt necessary, it was painful for her. “After all, this was my husband, and moving him wasn’t in our future plans,” she noted. “You can’t really envision a reality like this.”
The couple has been married since 2009 and renewed their vows a decade later in Turks and Caicos. Willis also shares three daughters from his previous marriage to Demi Moore: Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah.
