Trump: 'I will declare a national emergency' in DC regarding ICE cooperation

Trump Critiques D.C. Mayor’s Stance on ICE Cooperation

President Trump has expressed concerns about D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s approach to Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) as his 30-day emergency authority comes to an end. He stated that Bowser seems to be under pressure to limit local police involvement with ICE.

In a post on his social media platform, Trump criticized Bowser, claiming she has given in to demands from fellow Democrats. He recalled that, previous to this, he had commended her for collaborating with federal enforcement, especially after reporting a decline in crime following military deployment.

He stated, “It was impressive to see, but now, under the influence of radical left Democrats, Mayor Bowser—who has played a key role in the ongoing violent criminal activity in our capital—has informed the federal government that the metropolitan police will no longer assist ICE in dealing with dangerous illegal immigrants.”

Trump cautioned that if this trend continues, crime could increase significantly, leaving the residents and businesses of Washington, D.C., in a difficult position. He suggested calling for a national emergency if needed.

The city council did not move to extend Trump’s emergency powers over local police, which had expired recently. Chairman Mike Johnson mentioned he hadn’t received a request for any council action, noting that the city was cooperative and deemed an extension unnecessary.

Bowser had previously issued an executive order that facilitated cooperation between local police and federal authorities. The Army also extended the presence of the city’s National Guard until November 30th.

In a statement last week, Bowser indicated that the executive order aimed to revert to the previous operational status. When asked if the Metropolitan Police Department would cease transporting ICE detainees, Bowser affirmed that this was her expectation.

She concluded by emphasizing that immigration enforcement was not within the Metropolitan Police Department’s responsibilities and would remain so moving forward, especially following the end of the emergency.

Efforts to reach Bowser’s office for additional comments were made but not successful.
