Military leader in Israel supports Witkoff's plan instead of Netanyahu's approach to Gaza

Israel’s military leader, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, is not in favor of a full military takeover of Gaza. Instead, he is advocating for the Witkov program, according to discussions with three senior sources. A former senior official from the IDF mentioned that Zamir’s judgment is based on his experiences during the conflict. Recently, he advised the Cabinet that while the IDF is prepared for a ground operation, the priority should be to rescue all hostages and negotiate a settlement.

In the context of Israel’s recent decisions, the 2024 Telsultan incident remains significant. During that event in Rafa, Hamas executed six hostages, underscoring the dangers that come with large-scale operations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists that Israel’s objective isn’t to occupy Gaza but to liberate it from Hamas, claiming that until Hamas disarms, taking control of Gaza City is essential to ensure the release of approximately 48 hostages currently held.

Interestingly, some military experts believe that the pressure on Hamas has already shifted its stance to align with the Witkov framework outlined on July 29th. A source stated that this plan needs acceptance, emphasizing that Washington should grasp the military’s viewpoint presented in the Cabinet meetings. Hamas seems inclined to agree to certain conditions.

A spokesperson for Netanyahu confirmed that the Israeli Cabinet decided to follow through with the operational strategy proposed by the Chief of Staff.

Recently, a report mentioned that a source close to the president’s national security team indicated that the strike against Hamas’ leadership in Doha was strategically timed to complicate negotiations. The sentiment is that any progress often coincides with unexpected attacks from Netanyahu’s side.

Sources also revealed that both the IDF’s Chief of Staff and Mossad leaders were against the current timing of operations against Hamas, suggesting it might be wise to wait for a more favorable moment to respond in negotiations. This position was reiterated recently in various high-level meetings. A second source noted the Witkov plan was well-received, outlining conditions like Israel’s temporary withdrawal for 60 days in exchange for live hostages and the return of bodies.
