Controversy Over Flag Display in New Jersey Town
A town in New Jersey is facing backlash for its decision to maintain American flags at full staff, despite an order from President Donald Trump to lower flags in memory of Charlie Kirk. The situation became more heated when Nick Mangold, a former player for the New York Jets, openly criticized Madison’s choice, sharing a post on social media that featured the flags flying high.
In response to the controversy, Madison officials clarified via Facebook that their actions were aligned with the state of New Jersey’s flag policy at that time. They stated, “This weekend, we were asked about the status of the American flag in the borough. Madison’s policy is to follow the state’s daily flag.” According to them, the flag status was ‘Full Staff’ over the weekend.
The official post also mentioned the town’s stance against political violence and their efforts to unite the community around shared values. However, Mangold expressed his frustration about the situation directly on social media, adding tags for New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and the candidates looking to succeed him.
Additionally, officials from Bergen County are also reviewing the flag policy in light of the events surrounding Kirk, who was killed in a shooting at Utah Valley University. This tragic incident sparked memorials across the country, with NFL teams observing moments of silence during games to honor his memory.
