Trump criticizes Hochul’s support for 'communist' Mamdani: 'No reason to waste good money'

Trump Criticizes Hochul and Backs Mamdani in NYC Mayoral Race

President Donald Trump has taken aim at New York Governor Kathy Hochul, suggesting that her support for Zoran Mamdani in the upcoming New York City mayoral election could have significant implications.

Hochul had delayed her endorsement due to concerns over Mamdani’s past remarks. “There’s a lot of reconciliation needed with the Jewish community,” she said, indicating that some of his comments had been misinterpreted as hurtful. This was noted in a conversation she had with him back in July.

On Sunday, the New York Times published a column in which Hochul officially voiced her support for the democratic socialist candidate. She mentioned their ongoing discussions about key issues, acknowledging a divergence of views while emphasizing their shared goal of ensuring a safe and affordable New York City.

“You know, they really complement each other,” Trump remarked, critiquing their alignment.

Hochul stated, “I’m quite firm on the need for police to have the resources they require to keep our streets safe.” She pressed Mamdani to ensure the NYPD is led with strong oversight, addressing the growing concern over anti-Semitism and the pressing need for action.

“With the troubling policies emerging from Washington, it’s crucial that the next mayor doesn’t buckle under pressure from Trump,” she added, characterizing Trump as “an individual whose influence has been questionable at best.”

Mamdani articulated his dedication to creating a more affordable New York. “I look forward to collaborating with the governor to put money back into New Yorkers’ pockets while also enhancing the safety and security of our city for families,” he explained.

In response to Hochul’s endorsement, Trump was vocal on social media, labeling Mamdani a “radical” candidate. “This is surprising and troubling for New York City,” he stated, questioning the rationale behind Hochul’s support.

In the burgeoning mayoral race, Mamdani faces incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent, alongside other notable candidates including former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

“New Yorkers are aware of the backroom dealings and recognize that Curtis Sliwa is their advocate, standing apart from the insiders,” remarked Daniel Kurzina, spokesperson for Sliwa’s campaign.

He further stated, “It’s just a matter of time before the worst decisions will catch up with those who supported them.”
