Settlement Payment from Facebook

This week started with an interesting surprise. On Monday morning, an email from PayPal caught my eye, featuring the subject: “Paying for Facebook Consumer Privacy User Profile Litigation Settlement.” It turned out to be legitimate. When I opened it, I saw that $37.55 had been credited to my PayPal account—my portion of Facebook’s $725 million privacy settlement.

I’m relieved to have noticed the email since I considered buying something, but I opted to transfer the funds to my bank instead. I should see that in my account by Thursday.

That’s a nice little windfall. However, here’s the catch: if you forget to file your claim before the 2023 deadline, you miss out entirely.

This payout is linked to what may be the largest privacy settlement in U.S. history. Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has agreed to this hefty sum to settle various claims, particularly around sharing user data with third-party companies.

Back in 2018, Facebook faced serious allegations about mishandling personal data. The controversy primarily stemmed from Cambridge Analytica, a British political consultancy, which exploited data from around 87 million Facebook users during Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. In a recent statement, Meta denied any wrongdoing, asserting that they chose to settle in the community’s and shareholders’ best interest.

No immediate response came from Meta representatives when contacted for comment.

Payment Details

If you’re curious about how much you might receive, it varies depending on how long you’ve had an active Facebook account. For those interested in more details about the settlement payments, there’s an official website you can check out. Keep in mind that payments are issued only to class members with valid claims, and distribution will continue for about ten weeks. If your claim is approved, you’ll get an email notification days before the payment is processed.

If you’re unsure about the status of your claim, you can reach out to the payment administrator at the provided email, just be sure to include your claim ID.

Payments are being sent through various methods—some will receive direct deposits, while others may get checks or even virtual prepaid cards, depending on the preferences indicated during the claim submission. Personally, I didn’t remember which method I selected, but that PayPal email helped jog my memory.

Your settlement amount may differ from mine. The official information mentions that claimants earn points for each month they maintained an active Facebook account, which contributes to the total payout.

According to reports, the average payment stands at around $29.43, with the highest payment reaching $38.36.
