Barstool’s Response to Employee Comments on Charlie Kirk
Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, recently shared his thoughts on whether the company would take action against an employee who made derogatory remarks about Charlie Kirk. In an exclusive discussion, he mentioned that decisions about firings will be made on a “case-by-case” basis, though he did not entirely dismiss the possibility of termination.
Speaking at his third Pizza Fest event in New York City, Portnoy noted the situation at a bar in Philadelphia, asserting, “People are going to express whatever they want; it’s a free country.” He acknowledged that such expressions could have consequences.
Portnoy had previously condemned the assassination of Charlie Kirk, emphasizing that differing opinions should not lead to celebrating violence. “If you don’t consider this one of the darkest days in American history,” he stated, “you’re part of the problem.”
Barstool is not alone; numerous others have started taking disciplinary actions against employees who laughed at Kirk’s tragic event. For instance, a New Jersey doctor resigned after being accused of celebrating Kirk’s death, and NASDAQ fired one employee for similar insensitivity. Other companies have followed suit, with MSNBC also dismissing a political analyst for inappropriate remarks.
The sentiment around Kirk’s assassination has sparked a broader discussion. Portnoy, while remaining cautious in his approach, noted that justifying violence or control measures may lead to repercussions for employees at Barstool. As the situation unfolds, it’s clear that public responses to sensitive events can have significant workplace implications.
