Political Violence Discussion on CNN
Joe Borelli, a former Republican leader in the New York City Council, confronted CNN’s Abby Phillip on Monday, challenging the notion that political violence is primarily a left-right issue. Phillip attempted to address comments made by President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance regarding their political opponents, but Borelli cited a YouGov opinion survey. According to this survey, 24% of respondents identify as “very liberal,” and among them, 10% reportedly feel it’s acceptable to celebrate the deaths of political adversaries. By comparison, only 4% of conservatives and 3% of those identifying as “very conservative” shared this sentiment.
Phillip noted this surprising perspective, suggesting it’s not what one would expect from the White House in response to such incidents. Borelli elaborated on the survey, indicating that 16% of liberals believe it’s okay to feel joy when a political opponent is killed, with higher figures among very liberal individuals—25% condoning such violence. He mentioned that for conservatives, this figure drops significantly to 4%. “There’s a problem here,” he stated, likening it to a cancer within the political landscape.
Recently, some on the political left appeared to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, who was shot and killed. His suspected assassin, Tyler Robinson, reportedly resided with a partner who was described as deeply entrenched in leftist ideology and who harbored animosity towards conservatives and Christians, as noted by sources.
In the aftermath, several educators, especially on the left, have been dismissed for their reactions to Kirk’s death. Michelle Bravo, a neurologist at the University of Miami, and Dean Laura Sosh Litesey, as well as others, faced termination for justifying Kirk’s assassination or expressing sympathy online.
Additionally, MSNBC let go of political analyst Matthew Dowd, who suggested Kirk was somehow responsible for his own demise, while the Washington Post fired columnist Karen Attia for claiming Kirk had made racially offensive remarks.
A further YouGov poll revealed that 7% of moderates find it acceptable to celebrate the death of a political adversary. Trump has also remarked on the left’s issues related to radicalization and violence, highlighting ongoing concerns within the political sphere.
