Memphis Coach Critiques Georgia’s Player Conduct

Memphis Tigers football coach Ryan Silverfield didn’t hold back on Monday, taking a shot at the Georgia Bulldogs in light of a recent troubling incident involving player behavior.

Speaking after his appearance on the Memphis Tiger Network, Silverfield noted he holds his players accountable, emphasizing that some discussions, well, they may not reflect the usual norms. He remarked, “We always start with the negative,” and referenced an incident involving a Georgia wide receiver arrested for extreme speeding—citing it as a “weekly event.”

Silverfield went on to illustrate similar offenses, mentioning a DUI involving a former USFL player and another case of college athletes misusing a paintball gun.

The most recent arrest related to the Georgia football program occurred in March when a wide receiver was caught driving at 107 mph. Additionally, offensive lineman Marquez Easley was reportedly part of a vehicular collision.

Georgia football has faced serious challenges, including a tragic incident in January 2023 when offensive lineman Devin Wilk and recruitment staff member Chandler LeCroy lost their lives in a crash while LeCroy and defensive tackle Jalen Carter were allegedly racing.

Meanwhile, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has addressed the situation with the press. In March, he affirmed they would assess incidents on an individual basis, trying to understand the context behind each occurrence. “We will continue to look at these on a case-by-case basis,” Smart stated, recognizing that players, particularly young adults, do make mistakes, much like his own children who are around the same age.
