Stephen A. Smith announced that his “First Take” co-host, Molly Qerim, “resigned suddenly” from ESPN Monday evening.
During his Tuesday installments on Sirius XM, Smith shared that the network is keen to retain Qerim during ongoing contract discussions. He described the situation as “unpleasant to watch” and expressed dissatisfaction. “To say I’m very sad about it is an understatement,” he remarked in The Stephen A. Smith Show.
Smith highlighted the personal connection, stating, “Molly is a friend, a colleague, someone I’ve leaned on as she has for me.” He indicated that the specifics of the situation aren’t for public consumption, noting that there were ongoing negotiations and ESPN certainly didn’t want to lose her.
Reading Qerim’s Instagram Stories, Smith confirmed her exit but admitted he was taken by surprise. “Bluntly, it was a shock. I didn’t realize this was on her mind, but ultimately, she has to make her choice and move forward,” he stated.
He added, “I don’t like it. I’m not happy about it because I value what she brought to our team, both professionally and personally. I’m really going to miss her; it’s as simple as that.”
Smith ultimately wished her the best, expressing hope that “love is always here.” Qerim herself shared her departure news via her Instagram Stories, mentioning it all happened “faster than I intended.”
Hours later, ESPN’s reports suggested she declined their latest contract offer and will depart at the end of the year.
Smith opened the Tuesday show with a heartfelt tribute, emphasizing Qerim’s significance to ESPN since 2006 and her vital role in the success of “First Take” over the last decade. Burke Magnus, ESPN’s content president, acknowledged her calmness, skill, and professionalism, stating, “We respect Molly’s decision and wish her well in the future.”
As for when Qerim’s official last episode will air, neither she nor ESPN provided details. It’s uncertain what her next steps will be, as her Instagram story ended with “Stay Tuned” and a smiley face.
