Cleveland Fire Chief Placed on Leave After Controversial Post

The chief of the Cleveland Fire Department has been put on paid administrative leave due to social media posts that were deemed “insensitive” and “inflammatory,” as announced by Mayor Justin Bibb on Tuesday. The posts surfaced following the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative leader.

One of the posts, shared by Chief Anthony P. Luke on Facebook, included an illustration featuring an elephant venerating a golden rifle, with a caption suggesting, “Deliver the next sacrifice!” This content appeared after the shocking killing of Kirk, who was just 31 years old, at a university event in Utah on September 10th.

Mayor Bibb commented that the post “crossed the line.” He expressed concern, noting, “This post makes gun violence romantic. It’s a very serious problem in a city where many families are grieving too many each week.” His words touched on a broader issue of safety, particularly affecting children who may be afraid to sleep soundly at night.

While Bibb supports freedom of speech, he emphasized that the post did not reflect the values of compassion and safety that he advocates for. He stated, “The post of Chief Luke crossed the boundaries. It was insensitive, inflammatory and did not reflect the values ​​of compassion, unity and safety that I strive to strive for.” This led to his immediate decision to place Chief Luke on administrative leave.

Luke had recently become the city’s 17th Fire Chief.
