Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons expressed significant concern on Monday regarding President Trump potentially utilizing the Justice Department against his political opponents.
During a segment with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Simmons mentioned Trump’s vice chief of staff labeling Democrats as a “radical organization,” which raised some alarm bells for him. He asked, “Is the US president planning to ban Democrats? Are we witnessing a shift where the president might unleash the Democratic Justice Department?”
When Collins probed him further about his worries, Simmons responded, “Yes, that’s definitely a concern. This president has made it clear he’s willing to use the Justice Department for political gains, and he doesn’t shy away from saying it.”
In recent commentary, Trump has intensified his criticism of left-leaning groups, particularly following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The administration appears set on making moves to address what it views as radical elements within these groups.
He noted on Social Platform X that “broadcasting hate speech that poses a threat of violence isn’t protected under the First Amendment; it’s criminal. For too long, the radical left has normalized violent threats and even called for assassination.”
In response, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) condemned Trump ally Pam Bondi for her remarks, pointing out that she “failed to act on numerous direct death threats against me and my family.”
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson countered in an email to The Hill, suggesting that if Trump is concerned about governmental targeting of political adversaries, he should reflect on his own actions rather than deflect blame.
The Department of Justice has been contacted for further comments on the matter.
