New York City Sees Major Crime Reduction
Almost all major crimes have significantly decreased in New York City, with six out of seven major felony categories experiencing notable drops. The city has achieved an eighth consecutive month of overall crime reduction, as highlighted in the annual management report released on Wednesday by Mayor Eric Adams.
The report presents a hopeful outlook on crime trends in Gotham for 2025. Notably, murders are down by 6%, while robberies have decreased by a substantial 17%. Felony assaults are also down by 9%. Figures shared indicate that both Grand Larceny and Grand Larceny Auto are down by 10%.
The Big Apple has reported a 14% drop in shooting incidents, with numbers falling from 932 to 804 compared to last year. Interestingly, August saw the fewest shootings since the Compstat era began in 1993.
“Our administration is once again showing how our competent management team is delivering real results to all New Yorkers,” Adams stated.
The aspects that matter most to New Yorkers—affordability, public safety, education, and cleanliness—are reportedly being prioritized. According to Adams, his administration is breaking records and focusing on serving working-class people.
Crime in public spaces has also seen reductions, with a 12% fall in park crime, a 2% drop in crimes within the transport system, and a 5% decline in the NYC Housing Department buildings. Major school felony cases have also experienced a downturn.
Despite these encouraging statistics, the NYPD has identified a troubling rise in rape cases this year, attributing it partly to changes in how certain crimes are classified.
The report further revealed a slight increase in the time it takes for the NYPD to respond to serious ongoing crimes, which rose by 14 seconds, resulting in an average response time of 30 seconds for all incidents.
Adams noted an increase in enforcement efforts related to ghost cars, illegal dumping, and potholes. He also mentioned achieving progress in tackling rat populations, which has become a topic of discussion due to his pets.
Additionally, the report highlighted the creation or preservation of 28,000 affordable housing units in 2025, showcasing another commitment to addressing housing needs.
