A coalition of students, faculty, staff, and labor unions from the University of California (UC) has initiated a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming violations of their academic and free speech rights.
The legal action, submitted to the US District Court for the Northern District of California on Tuesday, accuses the Trump administration of attempting to influence the university system from a “campus standpoint,” which raises significant concerns.
Recently, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) faced a federal fine of $1.2 billion and suspended federal research funding due to findings from the Department of Justice (DOJ) that indicated breaches of federal civil rights laws. Yet, a judge intervened, ordering the restoration of $584 million in funding on August 15th.
A July report from the DOJ alleged that UCLA was “intentionally indifferent” in fostering hostile environments for Jewish and Israeli students.
The lawsuit filed on Tuesday asserts that the administration’s tactics mirror those used against other private institutions like Harvard, Brown, and Columbia.
According to the lawsuit, following a letter from the Trump administration to UCLA on August 8, the university received various demands linked to the reinstatement of its federal research funding. These demands included restrictions in certain campus areas, sharing disciplinary records of international students with the federal government, banning racial preferences in hiring and scholarships, and modifying policies affecting transgender students in various aspects.
Additionally, the administration requested UCLA appoint a “resolution monitor” to oversee campus activities, indicating they believe they have the authority to appoint officials for this role if UCLA cannot reach a consensus.
The lawsuit claims that these actions have created a significant chilling effect on the freedom of speech and association rights of many in the UC community, contributing to a decline in diversity among its student body.
“The threats and coercive tactics of the defendants have instilled a widespread sense of fear among UC faculty, students, and employees,” the lawsuit implies.
The UC system includes ten campuses across Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, and Los Angeles, as well as five medical centers and various labs.
Inquiries were sent to the White House, DOJ, and UC systems for further comments.
