Investigation into California Mosque Shooting

Caleb Velasquez, an 18-year-old, has been identified as one of the two suspects involved in a mass shooting at a California mosque, related to anti-Muslim sentiments. Velasquez, along with 17-year-old Kane Clark, is suspected of killing three individuals at an Islamic center in San Diego. Both were found deceased from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, as reported by multiple outlets. The bodies were discovered near a shotgun and a gas canister marked with Nazi symbols.

The San Diego Police Department stated that the threat has been neutralized. They set up a media staging area near the scene of the incident. However, they did not provide any comments when approached by media representatives.

Authorities are looking into anti-Muslim messages that were reportedly found on the suspects’ vehicle, suggesting the possibility of a hate crime. It’s been suggested that at least one suspect left a note expressing sentiments of ethnic pride. Additionally, one of the firearms linked to the shooting had the phrase “hate speech” inscribed on it.

On the day of the shooting, police were informed by the mother of one suspect, who reported that her son was missing and displaying suicidal tendencies. A mosque guard, who died during a confrontation with the suspects, is credited with potentially preventing further casualties.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wall noted that the description provided by the mother about one suspect donning camouflage clothing seemed inconsistent with typical suicidal behavior, prompting a more comprehensive threat assessment. Wall confirmed that the investigation is treating this as a hate crime, mentioning the presence of hate rhetoric involved in the incident.
