On Instagram, she shared a video where she addressed the situation that escalated due to a lighthearted remark she made about a dinner buffet in previous social media posts. The backlash prompted her to reflect on her words more seriously.
In her video, she expressed remorse, saying, “I just wanted to come here and sincerely apologize. I know that as a professional athlete, I travel the world and encounter different cultures.” She mentioned her positive experiences during the tournament, emphasizing how kind everyone was. What she said, she felt, did not reflect that experience at all.
Townsend continued, acknowledging her mistakes, saying, “There are no excuses, no words. I’ll strive to be better.” She expressed gratitude for her role in representing her country, adding that she can only work on improving from here.
